Northern Creates Light Scoop for NY’s Essex Crossing Site 2

Right on the heels of its successful completion of Site 6, Northern Architectural Systems is moving ahead to Essex Crossing Site 2.

Northern is fabricating factory-glazed curtainwall for the 40-foot high wall of glass called the Light Scoop.

SHoP Architects envisioned this as a way to bring outside lighting into the multi-level promenade that will house the Broome Street Garden and Essex Street Market. The concept includes a continuous promenade connecting the Essex Crossing sites with sub-grade tunnels. Hopefully this “Market Line” will become a vibrant urban shopping mecca. For sure, it will become one of the top five largest public markets in the Country with 150,000 square feet of space, according to Rohan Mehra, a principal at Prusik Group, the firm that’s working on the commercial spaces. The Market Line draws inspiration from the world’s great markets, including the Boqueria Market in Barcelona and London’s Borough Market.

The Essex Crossing group of sites is a mega-project on Manhattan’s lower East Side which is, at the same time, a major overhaul and re-anchoring of a classic neighborhood.
